Linksys NSLU2

Mark: Good

Networked storage device

I recently got a Linksys NSLU2 to work on my LAN. It has USB connections for two USB drives or one drive and one memory card, such as my camera's CF card. I have an 80 GB IDE drive in an external USB enclosure connected to it. It's not as fast as an internal drive, of course, but it has the virtue of being small (about twice as big as a cigarette pack), and not having even a fan. It makes essentially no noise and seems to draw little power.

The NSLU2 can be configured and used from eCS directly. To configure just use Firefox and connect it to the (unusual) default address of 192.168.1.77. Default user is "admin" with "admin" as password. Shares can be used via command: net use x: \\nslu2\data. But EA-Data are not supported. A file named "EA DATA. SF" can be created, but the hidden attribute can not be set.
