Week of USB scanners

2005-07-18 16:58:42 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

Paul Smedley achieved wonderful results working on new version of Sane - users report about support of new USB scanners every day.

The twenty ninth week of 2005 is dedicated to collection of info about compatible/non-compatible scanners. Our database contains 13 records only... Major part of the models are not produced anymore. Post new reports using the web-form.

Attention! The developers of solutions are interested to know the list of unsupported scanners.

Moreover, we invite you send us logs of eCS installer. If sound/network card was not detected by the eCS 1.2 installer, then send instlog.zip file (\var\log) to support (at) ecomstation.com

eComStation in 2006 and Beyond

2005-07-17 01:29:15 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [www.ecomstation.com, Bob St.John]

eComStation product plan calls for sales of eComStation through mid-2007. Even then, there are no plans to terminate the product. That is simply the time frame of the current product plan.

On July 12, IBM announced withdrawal of active marketing and end of support for OS/2. IBM had previously indicated end of service for OS/2 Warp 4 is December 31, 2006, and the withdrawal from active marketing as of December 23, 2005, indicating IBM will not sell OS/2 Warp 4 after this year.

This announcement covers the IBM plans for the IBM distribution of the OS/2 products. The announcement does not impact OEMs who may use OS/2 and other IBM products as part of their product solution.

"eComStation will remain available as long as it is a good business. There is no end in sight". - Bob St.John, Director of Business Development, Serenity Systems International

Frequently asked questions and answers

2005-07-13 16:00:37 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

We recommend to resellers and solution developers use eCSFAQ collection. This is the most complete collection of questions and answers related to eComStation (russian language, more than 220 records). The central database allows minimize expenses of resellers.

Frequently asked questions concerning the eCSFAQ itself:

  • Why the eCSFAQ is free? Make it as paid service.
  • Why the quantity of questions don't change?
  • Are there english version of eCSFAQ?

The answers will be published in the august.

"OS/2 and eComStation Developers Workshop" was hold on the weekend of 09. and 10. July 2005 in Dresden, Germany.

Let's wait for reports and stories of participants. The only thing we know, all developers was amazed by the presentation related to GUI Fortran development. You can download some presentations from this ftp.

eCo Software have participated in the workshop (by correspondence) too and have distributed Personal Cards Manager (aka WPPerson) flyer.

The participants thank OS/2 users of Dresden (and Robert Henschel in particular) for good organization of the workshop.

ACPI driver 1.0.7

2005-07-03 20:42:51 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

Updated ACPI driver for eComStation is available for "inhabitants" of the eComStation beta-zone. Read the scenario of testing in ACPI.doc (testing the event of Power button).

"The ability to support ACPI is becoming more and more important in order to take advantage of new power management capabilities, or even to support the operating system on newer hardware. Therefore, support for this technology will be an important feature to many users in the new version of eComStation." (PDF, HTML)

You can access the beta-zone via betazone.ecomstation.nl or www.ecomstation.com, [Log In], Access the BetaZone (if you get error related to password then edit your password via Profile and try again)

The ACPI driver is a product of Netlabs (http://www.netlabs.org/)

IBM and Microsoft Settle Antitrust Case

2005-07-01 20:49:19 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [VOICENWS, Timothy Sipples]

Microsoft has agreed to pay IBM US$ 775 million in damages, according to this news story.

The damages are a result of alleged harm primarily to IBM's OS/2 and SmartSuite businesses (and consumers).

In addition, Microsoft will extend $75 million in credit for Microsoft software to IBM. (IBM must consume some Microsoft software for its own business needs.) Thus the total settlement value is $850 million.

At this writing IBM stock is trading up about 1.25% on the news.

Request for testers with USB Scanners

2005-07-01 20:48:14 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [VOICENWS, Paul Smedley]

I've started work to make Sane work with USB Scanners on OS/2 using the usbcalls package by Markus Montkowski available from Netlabs.

As a precursor, I've compiled sane-find-scanner.exe which correctly identified the scanner on my machine.

I'd appreciate it if testers with a USB scanner would download this file and send me the report from running: sane-find-scanner -v

Note that this may require a newer version of usbresmg.sys than eCS 1.2 ships with. I had system traps with gPhoto2.

If traps in os2krnl are experienced with this build, please update usbresmg.sys using this package.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

NOTE: this will not scan - all it will do is detect (hopefully!) a USB scanner attached to your PC.

Help FIGHT for justice (no software patents in Europe)!!

2005-07-01 13:10:45 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [VOICENWS, Roderick Klein]

So before you wonder what this has todo with OS/2 ?Everything!!! OS/2 has a lot to thank about open source software. For example Mozilla, Thunderbird, Firefox (the GCC compiler with which the previously mentioned programs are compiled) are all open source applications. www.os2voice.org runs Apache as a webserver, ported from Linux and open source (like many other websites in the OS/2 community). Not just small companies can be effected by software patents but also free software ( the amount of software patent lawsuites keeps rising each year especially in the US!)

This is a dramatic call. I have been to Brussels on behalf of Mensys. Europe is on the brink on making an important dission about the future of its IT sector. As was discussed yesterday at a meeting organised in the European Parliament in Brussels. "Is the USA reforming its broken patent system ?" The answer is yes. There is a big chance that US politics is looking at what Europe will do.... Its time to send a very CLEAR message, its 5 MINUTES TO 12.

If you think that you contribution does not count ? It does count! FFII is one of the main organizations behind the very succesful lobby against software patents. They are succesful to large extend because they try and mobilize as many people as possible. As reported here.

"Vote for Buzek-Rocard amendments!

The Software Patents Directive, as approved by the European Council of
Ministers, would codify US-style Software Patents in the European Union.
If that happens, software developers will no longer own what they write
and can be sued for selling or distributing their own software. If you
don't inform your parliament, mega-corporations are doing the job for you:
"The European Parliament is filled with lobbyists of Microsoft, Eicta,
CompTIA and so on. There are 30 to 40 lobbyists permanently roaming the
halls." (in Eweek, 21 June (http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1829955,00.asp))

So how can you help ? Primarly is you have a website that is visited frequently put the protest front page online. The webdemo basicly starts right now and runs until the 6th of July.

Does it help this webdemo ? In 2003 a LARGE webdemo of websites that where closed (that could be effected by software patents) created much media coverage. So every website counts! I have also seen this in Brussels, your VOICE does not count In 2003 & 2004 FFII has proven this several times!

If you are a small European company you can send a signed fax! More details about the webdemo and the fax you can send can also be found here.

So before your head really starts to spin what's the background on this? For some years this heated debate on software patents has been running and this vote on the 6th of July is an important vote (yes the parliament vote on this already, but they now need to do it again). BTW please don't ask me to explain how Brussels works, its quite complex :-).

After this vote the process is not over. However the core message is that a set of amendments on the Council text are required. At this moment lobby groups related to large companies like Microsoft have send parties to Brussels that are saying they represent small and medium sized companies want software patents.

More information here

But they are not representing us :-( So make your voice heard with the webdemo or a fax (if you are small company).

Thank you for your time and support!

If you have any questions let me know.
