Audio/Data-Cd-Creator users: Request for help

2004-05-10 17:24:24 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [VOICENWS, Chris Wohlgemuth]

This posting is directed to current users of the Audio/Data-CD-Creator package for writing CD-R/RWs.

It's known that setting the right options for the various helper programs may be a difficult process especially for users new to CD writing. Main problem is probably finding the right driver for Cdrdao/2. To make things easier in the future I'm trying to create a database containing the necessary information so options may be set automatically when a writer is known. For this I need your help. If your CD writer (or CD-ROM, DVD writer) works with cdrecord and/or cdrdao/2 please gather the information specified below and send it to e-mail. Note that this will help you and every OS/2 user in the future so please take the few minutes.

Your privacy

Well, it's sad that today one has to state the obvious because of the ill-minded spammers out there, so here it comes:

All the information you send in will only be used for building the database and for nothing else. Your name and email address will not be included in any document or file and the sent in mail destroyed after processing.

Note that I will not answer to any of these mails so if you have any questions/ideas/whatever use the contact info contained in the Audio/Data-CD-Creator docs.

About Audio/Data-CD-Creator

ADC is a WPS integrated frontend to cdrecord, mkisofs, VIO mode grabbers and cdrdao for creating all kinds of CDs. MP3 encoding and decoding support.

Find more information here.

Gather the information

The following bits of information are necessary. You may just insert it here when replying to this posting. If you have several working devices or a dedicated CD-ROM for grabbing include the information for all of your devices by duplicating the template below.

  1. The name of your writer as used in advertising.

       Example: AOPEN CRW9624, Ricoh MP6200, Teac CD-532-E

       Your writers name:

  2. The features of your writer/CD-ROM. Use the following command to capture the information (be sure to adapt the dev=... setting) in a temporary file.

               'cdrecord dev=x,y,z -prcap > out.txt'

  3. Does your writer support buffer underrun protection (burnproof/burnsave/just-link/...)?
  4. Does your writer need the 'Sony multisession fix'? (Setting on the General page 2)
  5. Additional needed options for cdrecord when writing audio CDs (if any).
  6. Additional needed options for cdrecord when writing data CDs (if any).
  7. Writer or driver selection when using cdrdao. (cdrdao/2 page 1)
       Example: (driver) cdd2600, AOPEN CRW9624

       Your driver:

  8. Additional options for cdrdao (if any). (cdrdao/2 page 1)
  9. Are you using cdrdao.exe coming with CD-Creator? If no please specify the release you're using.
  10. If you use different settings for 1:1 copy (source) please specify them here. Include everything you find on that page and the cdrdao release you're using. (cdrdao/2 page 2)
  11. If you use different settings for 1:1 copy (target) please specify them here. Include everything you find on that page and the cdrdao release you're using. (cdrdao/2 page 3)
  12. If you use mpg123 or MMIOMP3 for MP3 decoding, do you have to specify 'Swap bytes when writing'? (MP3 decoding page)
  13. Send the information to this e-mail (Note: remove the "DESPAM")

Firewire Support for OS/2 and eComStation

2004-04-29 15:25:02 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [VOICENWS, Robert Henschel]

Today, netlabs.org, the OS/2 User Group Dresden and Alexandr Cherkaev announce the beginning of a project that will create a Firewire driver for OS/2.

The goal of this project is to write an open source OS/2 IEEE 1394, or short Firewire, controller driver and mass storage layer. The initial version of the driver will support PCI attached Firewire controllers build around the VIA Technologies Inc. VT6306 chipset. A hard drive connected via a Firewire case will be supported by the sbp2 protocol. It is our intention to deliver a first version of the driver before July 2004!

This project would not exist without Netlabs! If you want to support the Firewire driver please consider sponsoring Netlabs!

More information about this project can be found at the netlabs.org FireWire project webpage;

More information about netlabs.org sponsoring is available here.

DDK2 project

2004-04-25 21:28:11 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru, Adrian Gschwend]

I'm glad to announce DDK2, an extension to the DDK sourcecode. Timur Tabi wrote some enhancements every OS/2 device driver developer should use so make sure to get the code now!

DDK2 is an upgrade to IBM's device driver kit (DDK) for OS/2 Warp. DDK2 is a collection of files that replace or augment the files that are part of the current IBM DDK. These new files contain bug fixes or new features that should have been part of the DDK in the first place.

DDK2 is necessary because IBM is slow and reluctant to accept these changes from outsiders. There is no real process in place for DDK submissions, and legal issues make it difficult to incorporate code written by non-IBMers with IBM code.

Every OS/2 device driver programmer should get DDK2.

PMVNC released

2004-04-15 13:01:46 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [eCo Software, software updates]

VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is remote control software which allows you to view and interact with one computer (the "server") using a simple program (the "viewer") on another computer anywhere on the Internet. The two computers don't even have to be the same type, so for example you can use VNC to view an office Linux machine on your Windows PC at home. VNC is freely and publicly available and is in widespread active use by millions throughout industry, academia and privately.

Today we present full-value VNC-server, which allows control computers with eCS installed (we recommend use java-web-browser to view the eComStation Desktop).

VNC allows use slow modem connection to control remote system.

Contact Eugene Romanenko if you are writing an overview about VNC configuration and security.

Open Sourcing OS/2 Software Campaign

2004-04-15 11:39:47 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [www.os2world.com, Martin Iturbide]

Some weeks ago www.os2world.com started the campaign. In result, many developers published their source codes.

Now we repeat the original message again.

There is many OS/2 software around the Internet that had been abandon by it's authors. Many software are great products that are still used by many OS/2 users and software that deserves to have further enhancements.

The idea will be in a polite way to ask the developers of this abandon OS/2 software to release the source code of it. Many of they don't code anymore under OS/2 and don't care anymore about it and will have no problem releasing the source code. The benefits of open sourcing their code will be that other OS/2 developers can learn from the code and possible continue their projects.

I had a good experience asking developers to open source their software. I started some years ago the OS/2 gaming site and I also tried to contact the OS/2 abandoned games developers. Much of the developers don't care anymore about the game and gave me freely the source code for their games and let me choose to license to be distribute with them. (You can check out the open sourced OS/2 games).

So if you want to help me on this campaign, once you find a OS/2 abandoware program the steps will be:

  1. Ask the developer their permission to turn their software Open Source.
  2. Ask the developer which license does he prefer to use with his Software. There are several license that the developer can choose. If the developer don't care which license to use you can always suggest the GNU GPL which is very common with Linux and will keep further development of that software to also be open source.
  3. Get for the source code
  4. Bundle the Source, license text file and the binaries in a single zip file or WarpIn file. If you don't have time you can send to me source code and I will bundle it with the binaries.
  5. Distribute the binaries and the source code. There are several ways to distribute a file on the OS/2 community. The most common is to upload the file to hobbes OS/2 Archive. Check the upload instructions and policies.
  6. Announce that the program is now released as Open Source. We want other OS/2 users and developers to get interest on it. Lets post every software we can turn open source on the main OS/2 news site. The most easy way will be to send a news using the OS2World.com News Submition Form.

Remember that if you need help distributing the files, or bundle them in a single file you can contact me. Many OS/2 (and ex-OS/2) developers don't have time and will send you the files for you to give them some order. I have no problem helping on anything I can, like packaging the files, distribuite them and making the announcements to the OS/2 community.
